6 Hygiene Tips for the Workplace

Last Updated on October 2, 2022

Because most jobs require that you share a room or workspace with a number of people, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that colds and flu can spread quickly in the workplace. Most of us spend the largest part of our days at work, so it only makes sense to be just as hygienic, if not more, at work as we are at home.

Since health hazards are usually in places you wouldn’t typically expect, practicing consistent and proper hygiene can be essential in reducing the risk of illnesses while doing your job.

Tip #1 – Clean Your Workspace

Research has shown that the average office desk area has an enormous amount of bacteria and viruses on it. Clean your desk periodically with sanitizing sprays or wipes. Use the sanitizer on your desktop, mouse, keyboard and your phone’s handset. Also avoid keeping food in your workspace or eating at your desk.

Tip #2 – Use Hand Sanitizer Periodically

Germs can quickly spread throughout your office after shaking hands with your coworkers, using your mobile phone, and touching other items throughout your day. When soap and water are not available, use some hand sanitizer.

Tip #3 – Clean Kitchens/Lunchrooms Regularly

If you have a coffee mug, be sure to wash it regularly with warm water and soap, instead of just rinsing and reusing it. If there is a refrigerator, store your lunch there until you’e ready to eat. Be sure that the lunchroom area is always stocked with dish soap, surface sanitizer, hand soap and paper towels. Lastly, wipe down all common room surfaces at the end of each day.

Tip #4 – Stay Home If You’re Sick

Stay home if you’re not well as germs spread easily to others, especially the cold and flu. You’ll also benefit by being able to rest and get well quickly.

Tip #5 – Cover Your Nose or Mouth When Coughing and Sneezing

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when sneezing or coughing, then throw it away and wash your hands. Sneezes Spread Diseases!

Tip #6 – Keep Your Hands Away From Your Face

Avoid touching your face as viruses can effectively transfer from your hands into the body via the eyes, nose and mouth.
