Paper towels were initially invented in 1907 to cut down the spread of colds and other diseases. The shared hand-drying cloths in public bathrooms were suspected of making users sick. Since then, they have become typical restroom fixtures; however, paper towels are good for more than just drying hands in the restroom. They are a convenient product to have in other places that may need a quick wipe to clean up spills, messes, and remove germs from shared surfaces and objects.
Paper Towels Can Be Green Too!
Paper towels can be a sustainable option too, depending on a few factors. Today, paper towels made from 100% recycled paper are widely available and compostable, making them the most eco-friendly option. The dispenser matters too. An automatic dispenser that provides a controlled amount of paper can help facilities save on costs and prevent product from being wasted.
For example, an automatic dispensing system can save up to 30% on paper usage when compared to a manually operated, folded-towel system that requires individuals to pull product out. The pre-set length and hands-free mechanism encourages users to only what they need and eliminates the chances of accidentally pulling out too much. A length greater than 8 inches and no longer than 12 inches is ideal, as people may take more than they need if the sheets appear small.
Beyond the Bathroom
Paper towel dispensers are just as useful outside of the restroom too. When paired with a surface sanitizer, any surface or object can be cleaned and sanitized in a snap. Both items are convenient to have in several kinds of places, such as:
- Classrooms, especially in classes where students perform hands-on work, like science classes and labs, art, and cooking
- Daycares, where any given surface or toy could use a quick sanitizing before others use it
- Cafeterias and office break rooms, where food messes are likely and many people share the same tables
- Restaurants and their kitchens, where anything from the menus to food preparation surfaces need to be disinfected regularly
- Health clubs, so members can give machines an efficient sanitizing after each use
It’s All About Staying Healthy
Paper towels have remained popular because of their convenience and germ-fighting capabilities. As wet hands spread 1,000 more germs than dry hands, this last step of the hand-washing process is crucial. And, as hands pick up 30-50% of the bacteria on any given hard surface, cleaning messes as soon as possible helps to keep everyone healthy too.
