People prefer to give their time, effort, and money to businesses that are environmentally responsible. There are 3,000 businesses in the United States that are part of the Green Business Network and 80% of small-to-medium sized businesses in Canada are implementing green practices. Sustainability has become more than just a trend; it is a necessity for retaining customers, employees, and for preserving the earth.
Keep Employees Engaged
Green practices benefit the workplace in multiple ways. Saving money on resources is an obvious benefit, and often the driving force behind many sustainability programs. However, these programs increase employee engagement and productivity too. A study conducted by Sanja Pekovic and Professor Magali Delmas of UCLA found that companies with green practices had employees who were 16% more productive than those without. The more productive employees received more training (which is essential in order for a sustainability program to succeed), had better interpersonal relationships, and felt more motivated. Another survey conducted by Cone Communications found that 74% of those participants said their jobs were more fulfilling when they felt they were making a positive difference in social and environmental issues.
The Customer Perspective
Consumers are becoming more aware of how their choices impact the earth and see their decisions as a way of taking action. A survey by Cone Communications found that 72% of participants believe their choices make a “moderate-to-significant” impact on social and environmental issues. Customers expect the businesses they shop with to do the same, even if it costs them more. A global Nielsen study found that 66% of participants are willing to spend more money on a product that was created sustainably.
Where to Start
The three areas where businesses have the greatest impact on the environment are water usage, energy usage, and waste generation. Water usage can easily be reduced in the restroom with products like automatic flush systems paired with probiotic solution. Toilets and urinals are always flushed after use and costly plumbing problems, like blockages from scale buildup (that have the potential to waste gallons of water), are prevented by the solution. Automatic faucets use an average of 70% less water than manual fixtures, while Dyson air hand dryers use 80% less energy than conventional hot air dryers and also eliminate waste.
